Overview
Save Thyme is a Chrome extension for meal planning. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about the minimal data we collect.
Data We Collect
Anonymous Installation ID
When you install the extension, we generate a random unique identifier (UUID). This ID:
- Is not linked to your name, email, or any personal information
- Is used solely to track your monthly usage limits and subscription status
- Cannot be used to identify you personally
Usage Metrics
We track the number of recipe scans you perform each month to enforce free tier limits (15 scans/month for free users). This count resets monthly and is associated only with your anonymous installation ID.
Ingredient Data
When you scan a recipe, ingredient text is sent to our server for AI-powered normalization (e.g., converting "2 cloves garlic, minced" to "garlic"). These normalized mappings are cached anonymously to improve the service for all users. No recipe names, URLs, or other content is stored on our servers.
Payment Information (Premium Users Only)
If you upgrade to Premium, payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe. Stripe collects your email address for receipts. We store only your Stripe customer ID to manage your subscription. We never see or store your credit card details.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- Browsing history - We do not track what websites you visit
- Personal information - No name, email, or account required for free users
- Recipe content - Your saved recipes are stored locally in your browser, not on our servers
- Location data - We do not access your location
Where Data Is Stored
- Your recipes and meal plans - Stored locally in your browser using Chrome's storage API
- Usage data and ingredient cache - Stored in Google Firebase (US servers)
- Payment data - Stored by Stripe
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes. Data is shared only with:
- Google Firebase - For hosting our backend services
- Anthropic - For AI-powered ingredient normalization
- Stripe - For payment processing (Premium users only)
- SendGrid - For sending meal plan emails (Premium users only, when you request it)
Data Retention
- Local data - Stored until you uninstall the extension or clear browser data
- Usage metrics - Monthly counts reset at the beginning of each month
- Ingredient cache - Retained indefinitely to improve service quality
- Subscription data - Retained as long as you have an active subscription, plus any period required by law
Your Rights
You can:
- Delete local data - Uninstall the extension or use Chrome's "Clear browsing data" feature
- Request data deletion - Contact us to delete your server-side data
- Cancel subscription - Manage or cancel anytime through the extension settings
Children's Privacy
Save Thyme is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally. Significant changes will be communicated through the extension or our website.
