This one started with a question I couldn’t answer without building it out: what’s the overlap when you put an Italian pasta night, a Thai red curry, a Mongolian chicken stir-fry, and a mango tofu bowl in the same week?

Turns out — more than you’d expect.

The thread that runs through everything

Garlic goes into all four recipes. Green onions go into three. Red pepper flakes go into three. None of that required any planning — it just fell out of the recipe selection. Once you spot it, the list stops feeling like four separate grocery runs and starts looking like one efficient cart.

The more interesting connection is the Asian cluster in the middle of the week. The Thai red curry and the Mongolian chicken share chicken, scallions, and brown sugar. The Mongolian chicken and the mango burrito bowls share soy sauce, scallions, and red pepper flakes. And the Thai curry and the mango bowls share jalapeño, lime, and cilantro. The three recipes form a loose triangle — each pair shares something different, and the total overlap across them is substantial.

The orecchiette stands mostly apart, which is fine. It’s the comfort anchor: sausage, broccoli, butter, garlic, and a good handful of pecorino. It shares only garlic and red pepper flakes with the rest of the week, but it needs almost nothing else. Everything that makes it good is already in the pasta section.

On the Thai red curry

The Once Upon a Chef version is the hub recipe this week. Coconut milk, fish sauce, red curry paste — those are the one-offs — but everything else echoes forward. The chicken carries to Mongolian. The brown sugar carries to Mongolian. The jalapeño, lime, cilantro, and scallions all show up again in the mango bowls. If you’re deciding what to make first, make this one: it front-loads the pantry investment and the rest of the week gets easier.

On the Mongolian chicken

This is one of those recipes that looks like a restaurant order and takes 30 minutes. The sauce is soy, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, and a splash of cornstarch — simple pantry stuff that becomes something completely different on high heat. Scallions at the end. If you have kids, this is the one that gets finished.

On the mango burrito bowls

The wildcard and the one most likely to surprise you. Crispy tofu (pat it very dry), peanut sauce, fresh mango, jalapeño, cabbage, and cilantro over brown rice. It’s vegetarian and the protein swap is invisible — the peanut sauce is rich enough that you don’t notice what’s missing. Cookie + Kate’s version is reliable and the quantities are well calibrated.

The shopping strategy

Red pepper flakes, garlic, and soy sauce are in the cart regardless — you probably have them. The only real outlier purchases are the Thai red curry paste, fish sauce, and pecorino Romano. Everything else is produce, protein, and things you’ll use again.

One note on the limes: you’ll need at least two, possibly three — the Thai curry takes one, the mango bowls take nearly two. Buy a bag rather than individual limes.

The peanut butter situation: you need ⅓ cup for the mango bowls. If you make extra peanut sauce (it keeps a week in the fridge), you’ll have a solid condiment for the rest of the week.
